OGC announces the creation of new Environmental Data Retrieval API Standards Working Group
The new Working Group will create stable, standardized, service APIs based on simple data retrieval patterns, which will improve access to environmental data and information.
9 January 2020: The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) today announced the formation of the Environmental Data Retrieval API Standards Working Group (SWG).
The Environmental Data Retrieval API SWG will standardize several APIs, defined using OpenAPI Version 3, to retrieve various common data patterns from a data store.
Much environmental data cannot be readily copied and distributed in sensible timescales for many uses - a true example of ‘Big Data’. However, users can use APIs to specify precisely the subset of data they need so that a service provider can extract and serve the requested data in a web-friendly manner. Data access is therefore not only simplified, with any complicated service implementation details hidden from the user, but also scalable - both in terms of the underlying data volumes and the number of supported simultaneous users.
Using stable, standardized, service APIs based on simple data retrieval patterns will therefore improve the access and use of environmental data and information across different domains, facilitating more innovation and value.

Mine communication systems and drones key investment priorities for miners, says GlobalData
9th January 2020 -- The drive to improve productivity, efficiency and safety is leading to rising investment by mining companies, large and small, in a wide range of technologies. Already the extent of mines having invested in mine planning and management software is high, but there are rising levels of investment particularly in mine communication systems and drones, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
The company’s latest report, ‘Global Mine-Site Technology Adoption Survey 2019’, reveals that 61% of mine sites have already made considerable investment in fully implemented mine communication systems, such as private LTE networks or 5G (55% in 2018), while 56% of mines have invested to some extent in drones compared with 44% in 2018. Furthermore, 47% of mine sites surveyed intend to invest within the next two years, either for the first time or in addition to existing investments, in mine communication systems, while the figure is 41% for drones.

Solution to merge different data in SAP HANA
(Munich), 9 January 2020 - Open Grid Europe (OGE) is one of the leading gas transporters in Europe with a pipeline network of around 12,000 kilometres. Together with AED-SICAD as the general contractor, OGE has started “ADIS (Asset Data Integration System)”, a new IT project to efficiently support operations. The aim of the project is to merge data from SAP, GIS, and the plant’s information- and document management systems in the SAP HANA integration platform in a uniform front-end.
For this purpose, AED-SICAD, a VertiGIS company, together with its Belgian partner SIGGIS and the SAP system specialists ConVista Consulting, has formed a team of experts with extensive know-how in SAP and GIS. ADIS is to become the database for OGE's technical asset management for comprehensive digitization of processes, which will future-proof the platform for further innovations.
